This is one of the most popular upgrades. It is only available on Style A guitars. This style perfling adds abalone around the edge of the top but not around the fingerboard.

42 Style abalone top purfling is only available on Style A Deluxe and Special. This style trim has the abalone inlaid around the edges of the top and continues the inlay set in the top around the fingerboard. It adds an elegant but subtle touch.

The examples below are from a Style A Deluxe done with a “Loar Style” sunburst top.

The 45 Style abalone body purflings were used on the top of the line prewar Martin guitars. This style of abalone edge trim on the body is on each edge. That is, it surrounds the back, each side, the top, around the fingerboard, around the neck joint, and around the end pin wedge. It is an amazing amount of abalone to remain tasteful, at least I think it is. The proportions are just fine enough to look right.
